CHAPTER 4: SYSTEMS PLANNING – INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROJECT MANAGEMENT
1. Ways to minimize risks associated with major information system development risk:
i. Align information system plans with organizational strategy
ii. Define the problem or opportunity feasibility
iii. Assess and reassess project feasibility
iv. Apply appropriate project management techniques
v. Assign and or hire the right people
2. Information Systems Project Management
It is an ongoing process of directing and coordinating all phases of the systems development life cycle.
3. Objective Of Information Systems Project Management
To deliver a system that is acceptable to users and that it is developed within time and budget.
4. Project Management
- It is the process of planning, scheduling, and controlling the activities during the systems development life cycle.
5. Processes of project management
i. Planning
A project manager will plan out the system project by specifying the tasks or activities that must be done in terms of time, budget and staff.
ii. Scheduling
Mean determine dependency of the tasks.
iii. Tracking and monitoring
Project manager must track the project to monitor and control the project.
iv. Reporting
Preparing a report for the project.
6. Types of report
i. Variance Report
Overall project or specific tasks within the project
ii. Status Report
Often an open ended report that details the process that led to the current project state.
iii. Resource Allocation
This report identifies the resources in term of person-hours, equipment etc. that are being applied to specific project tasks.
7. Observation matters during the life of the project to observe
i. The actual starting and completion dates of tasks
ii. The use of resources
iii. The level of expenditure in each task
iv. The quality of output
v. Availability of resources
vi. How long noncritical tasks may be delayed.
8. Characteristics of good project manager
i. Good business knowledge
ii. Leadership skill
iii. Delegating Skill (handling authority)
iv. Negotiation Skill
